Senator Marco Rubio on Monday said he is not a racialist.
“I am an American.
I am a white American.
But I do not believe that we are all the same,” he said in an interview with Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren.
He said he thinks we can work together and that “it’s really a matter of when and how” to begin the process of ending racism in America.
“What we’ve seen is, we’ve had tremendous progress,” Rubio said.
“It’s not just a white man who wants to take a bullet for a black person.
That’s not what we have.
It’s not that it’s a black thing.
It is a white thing.”
But he said he would be willing to meet with Black Lives Matters activists who are engaged in the conversation and that he does not think he should “go down that path of not being a racist.”
“We’re all here for the same reason.
We’re all trying to get the same thing done,” he added.
“We all want to get this country where we want to go.
But it’s not a question of, ‘I want to be white,’ it’s, ‘We want to make sure this doesn’t happen to any of our children.'”ABC News’ Jennifer Griffin contributed to this report.
